Inaugural Clarksville Half Marathon Kandahar Shadow Race

I now have my fourth race in as many months under my belt, and today's was a good one! This time it was a shadow of the Clarksville (TN) Half Marathon. Clarksville is near Fort Campbell, KY (which actually straddles the KY/TN border), and someone deployed from there arranged for the shadow of the Clarksville race (story here.) Our finish times here will be recorded along with the runners in Clarksville, which is pretty cool. Anyway, back to the race... When I started training for PF Chang, I was hoping to finish the half in about 2 hours. Thanks to the ample training time here, I was able to finish today's race in 1:47:47! The bad news is that the Garmin has once again betrayed me, and let me know that the actual course distance was only 12.83 miles. I really need to stop wearing that thing for races and just accept that the course is measured accurately and that my finish time is whatever they say it is. Since I did wear it, I hate the thought of recording a 12.83 mile race, but I would feel dishonest recording my time as a half-marathon. I decided that the lesser of two lies would be to use the finish time calculator and record a time of 1:50:03 for 13.1 miles in my running log. The Garmin did give me some good news--my 10 mile split time was a full 4 minutes faster than my time for the Army 10 Miler just a month ago. I didn't expect to come this far this fast. I just hope I can keep it up when I get home. I'm definitely going to take advantage of this opportunity and start training for the full marathon. Good luck to everyone in your training, and I'll see you all in January--Steve

    Another race, another milestone...

I ran yet another race this morning. It was kind of short notice, and I didn't even register for it until this week. The Dutch hosted a 5k / 10k / 10 miler, and I decided to do the 10k since I had never raced that distance, plus I wanted to save myself for the half marathon coming up on November 7th. I didn't train specifically for it, and just ran it inline with my half marathon training. Today was supposed to be my long run anyway. I wasn't sure what pace I should be running at this distance, so I guessed at 7:40. I did pretty well and managed to maintain a 7:45 average. I finished with an official time of 47:20, but this time the Garmin said the course was short by .18 km. I used the Finish Time Calculator at the Runner's World website to estimate my finish time for the full 10k, and it said I would have done it in 48:11. Either way, that's way better than my 10k split time of 53:49 from the Army 10 miler at the beginning of the month. By the way, the main selling point for this one was "All asphalt, no dust". The only problem is that there aren't 10 km of paved roads on this base, so the course ended up being a somewhat goofy four legged out-and-back kind of thing. Not my favorite, but I did like staying off the gravel.

The good news is that hump day was about a week ago, so there are now more days here behind us than ahead. The frustrating part is that even though they have requested airlift to get us out of here, we still don't know exactly when we'll be leaving and probably won't for a while. Even more frustrating is that I may be out of Kandahar by the 12th, but still might not be home until the 18th. This is normal for a deployment and usually I'm much more tolerant of the uncertainty, but it's different when you have a target date that falls right in the middle of the return date range. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. Hope to see you there! --Steve

    I'm ready to roll...

Hello everyone! So after being a raptor for over 6 months I am finally blogging! Although I've read the blogs before, I have never actually done one. I just wanted to say how good it was to be back after all my summer fun in the sun! I went to California, Las Vegas, New Jersey, NYC and Maine.....during these trips and in between I have tried to keep up my workout routine with at least a long walk or a short jog, but def was not on top of it as I had been last spring.

I went to Sahuarita this past Saturday and completed four miles walking, rather than running because of aches in my hips and sides. I am happy to say they are starting to feel better! Thank you all who kept going and for the emails/blogs about your experiences these past few months. I am excited to get back into the swing of things of running, eating healthy and sharing this journey with all of you :)

    Jim Click Tia style

I really enjoyed my run on Sunday but I was a little sad that from the photos that I look much larger than pre-baby.
I ran it in 1:07. Which was seven minutes slower than my time 2 years ago.
I ran a decent race but I did run a too fast initial mile.
It was very hot in my quality tshirt.

October 4- Jim Click Run and Roll 8K

Our Raptors have been out and about and living their lives but we still train on! This is the time when the training is the hardest for everyone. We've been in waking up at the butt crack of dawn running for no one but ourselves and we don't look different and the scale is the same.
    But...
these are also that days that count the most. They are the days when we add our mileage and in the end we will be faster and stronger than yesterday. When you cross that finish line, you won't have anyone to thank but your mind and body. So, dust off your shoes and be thankful that we are able to move and work our body to do great things.Enjoy those precious few hours or minutes that you have alone with your thoughts or your music and review your progress. Maybe you were a veteran Raptor who came into this group thinking that it would be "fun" but turns out that you gained a new family hobby and many, many free t-shirts to wear at home. Maybe you were a new Raptor this year working to be a better person by running or walking your way back to healthy lifestyle. Maybe you just wanted a little family to see every Saturday. Whatever your story, you are a Raptor. We love each other and continually work to be better.

If we haven't seen your face for awhile on the blog or on the course, now is the time to do it. We want you back.
If you have been here all along, thank you! I appreciate your dedication and work out ethics. You one of the strong members that motivate our group when the numbers get smaller. You make my day when I see you and it's just the 4 of us. The Raptor blood runs deep in you.
If you are Steve, congratulations! You are doing an amazing job out there. Especially stellar job on your 10 miler in 8 minutes!! You are schooling us all. Sounds like you will be ready for a FULL marathon!
If you are The Vettas, our hearts and hopes are with you. We love you very much and are very sad about your loss. Hopefully, the Raptors will provide some support for you in this rough time. It takes all kinds to be a Raptor. We have little baby Raptors, we have big Raptors, we have Raptor Moms and Raptor Dads. We have Raptor teachers and Raptor students. I can't imagine a world without my Raptors.

    Army 10 Miler - Kandahar

Hello Raptors! Today was the day, my longest competetive run to date, and it went great. I was hoping to finish in under 1:30:00, and did it in 1:27:22 (Garmin time again, not official). I felt pretty good the whole race, and still managed to kick it up a notch at the end, although just barely. Not bad for a 38 year old man! Just in case anyone cares, here's my GPS data (switch to satellite view or it won't mean much). The course was flat, but only a few of the roads here are paved. Everything on the north side of the runway, and some on the south side, is gravel and pretty dusty. My knees are a little stiff, but on the whole I feel great. They were signing people up for a 1/2 marathon on 7 November, so I'll probably run that too. There's not much to do here off duty, so running is pretty popular.

We're almost half way finished, and I can't wait to be home. It's starting to look like I won't be home until the week after Phoenix, but there's still a chance so fingers crossed. There are plenty of other races to run! See you all soon.

    Tia's Back!

I've been gone awhile and I'm not sure why.

I've been horrible at my training and missed a few team runs due all kinds of excuses BUT...

Yesterday, I ran my 6 miles and it was a hard but I took it one mile at a time. It's getting thick. My goal today is to upload some Raptor photos today.

My apologies to Steve and the rest of the Raptors for being absent from the blogs lately. It's been a crazy two months with school starting again and me being lazy I guess.

    Fun in the Sun

Hello Raptors! 56 days into the trip (almost 1/3 done), and everything is going well. I've been training a lot, and feeling great! I'm running 21-25 miles a week based on a training plan I got from runnersworld.com, and am confident that I will be able to do 13.2 in 2 hours come January 17th. I've also lost about 10 pounds and still counting. I ran the Canada's Army Run (Course d'Armée du Canada) 5k today and finished in 26:22. I was hoping for under 25:00, but I'm happy with my time, especially since the Garmin said it was actually 5.11k, and I spent the first several hundred meters stuck in the pack at a 10+ minute pace. On top of that, it was the first time I've run on the road since July 12th. I'm not hating treadmill training as much as I thought I would, which is good because I think I'm going to be stuck with it for a while. Even after it cools off, the dust will still probably be choking, and running inside is probably saving me from an even worse case of brown lung. The next event is the Army 10 Miler on October 4th. My goal time for that is 1:30:00. Stay tuned!
See you all in January -- Steve

    Hello from Afghanistan

Hello Raptors! Just wanted to check in and let you all know that I am doing well. We're finally getting settled in and starting to get down to business here. I've also started back into my training. It will be a little more challenging than I had expected, looks like I'll be doing a lot of treadmill time than I would like. During the day, the heat, dust and traffic makes running on the roads unwise, although I do see people doing it. At night it's cool and there's no traffic, but it is dark, dark and more dark, and I'd be afraid of running off into a ditch or meeting a snake. I did 6 miles on a treadmill yesterday, and it felt good--it was the first time I had run since I ran with the roosters. I get off work at 1:30 in the morning, and the gym is almost empty and relatively cool at that time of day. In a couple of months when the weather cools off I should be able to start running on the road, which I'm really looking forward to. Right now I'm motivated and ready to run, I can't wait for January!

    See you all soon--Steve

    I wonder......

Next Saturday I suggest that if it is as hot as this Saturday.Instead of walking or running in the very hot air(just ask Jasper) that we walk in the water of our pool. We walk 1 hour every day and it is good resistance. We could walk in the "deep" end (I can touch) the kids can play in the shallow end, we could take turns watching the kids play, they are happy and safe, we are walking. We don't have to start as early as well. It's a win win situation. Just a thought. hugs to all Pat

7/12- Run with the Roosters (Raptors)

Mary and Steve registered for the Everybody Runs Run with the Roosters at Old Tucson Studios. I slept in a little too late and got to the race 10 minutes after the gun so we missed the starting line photos.
Steve finished under an hour true to his pace. We kept a look out for his orange shirt. Then he cheer Mary on with us.Mary was looking well and extremely strong in her finish. She even finished below her goal pace. As she ran in, she even gave us the Raptor Claw!Thank you to the Rooster and Earl who provided on course support to our runners. Thank you to Lisa for supporting our Raptors at the finish line. Lisa even went out of her way to get some water to the poor Rooster who was roasting in his costume.Since Earl wasn't able to make it to the finish line, we included him in the photo anyways via my excellent photoshopping!
Great job Raptors and Be Safe Steve.
We will think positive thoughts for you our our run. I dedicate mile 3 to you. Every Raptor, every Saturday will be wishing for your safe return to us stronger and faster at PF Chang!

    See you in January

Today has been an emotional day, and it's not over yet. Mary and I ran our first race this morning, the 5 mile Run with the Roosters at Old Tucson Studios. I've run quite a few 5k races at bases around the world, but this was my first 'real' race (i.e. open to the public) and it was pretty exciting. I finished in just over 55 minutes. Not as fast as I would have liked, but it was a finish none the less. Of course, the real emotion will come this afternoon when I get on a plane headed for Afghanistan. This trip has been a long time coming, but you're never really ready. The bright side is that I will have plenty of time to run and work out, and will come back in great shape to run a marathon. We are scheduled for a six month rotation, but unfortunately our exact return date is open ended at this time. Hopefully the math will work out and 12 July + 6 Months = Home before 17 January, even if just barely! It will be close, but I have faith that I will see you all in Phoenix. Good luck to you all in your training and in any races you may run between now and then. Of course I will continue to read the blog and will post as often as I can. I promise to keep my head down, and if anyone messes with me I'll just give 'em the claw!

First Race, Small but feels good.

So today was the Run with the Roosters 5 miler at The Old Tucson Studios. It was a hard run even though I can in under the goal I set for myself. I finished at 1 hour 13 minutes and 20 secondsish (my goal 1 hour and 15 minutes). It was harder than I expected since I had a mental block the whole way, all I could think about was the fact that Steve was leaving today. Somewhere around mile 3 I felt as if I would just curl up on the side of the road and cry. But I kept running, I just kept telling myself Just keep going (you know from "Finding Nemo" when Dory sings Just Keep Swimming"). Then I saw Steve and he said Earl was waiting at the turn around. It was so great to see a Raptor there and cheering me on. It gave the second wind I needed. As I approached the turn in to Old Tucson I could see an Orange shirt and two Red ones, it was Steve, Tia and Lisa, yelling and cheering me on to the finish. It made my heart sing. Thanks for the support Tia, Lisa and Earl and of course Steve. I feel like I could have done better but there is always next time.

    Mary
"Just Keep Going, Running, Going" (See now I know all you can hear is Dory from Finding Nemo)

    STEVE!!!

Hey! What's up everybody! I miss you all so much--it feels like it's been forever!!

Anyway...Steve is leaving us to go do some very important work for our country in Afghanistan, so we won't be seeing him for awhile (I don't know why I'm talking like you don't all already know this...).

So, STEVE...thank you so much for what you are doing for our country. I will miss seeing you on our Saturday morning runs. I mean, who else is going to run circles around me??? I look forward to seeing you on Race Day!! And don't worry, we'll take good Raptor-care of Miss Mary for you!! :)

Be safe and get home soon!! :)

Hey am I finally at the right place I think I might be this time. It's 4:30 AM Rog is still in bed but I am up with my cup of tea waiting for it to get light enough to go out for our walk. Yesterday I just got too hot and called it quits after 2 miles,we left at 7:00. Today we leave much earlier. It is much easier to walk in the pool. I never get hot in there. My stamina is much better with the pool walking but I need to get out on the trail I think. Rogers knee is better, so the trail it is going to be today!!!!! Well I hope this time this gets on Have a great day hugs to all Pat

Suck it up and get out there!

These 2 weeks have been rough because I've been preoccupied with my birthday(s), trip planning and getting use to a summer routine (lately I have been of the mind set that it's summer and why do I need to get up so early?).

There have been a plethora of excuses that I have used:
    1) It's too early. It's always going to be too early, it's summer but you'll be happy when it's still 95 degrees at 10PM and you ran.
    2) My kids aren't up yet and no one is here to watch them. Okay, this one might actually hold some water because you can't very well lock the kids in the house while you take a 40 minute run. But maybe you can run down the road a little and run back into the house to check and run back out and in and out. Treadmill at a gym or house seems to be the only remedy for this one. BUT if you have 1 kid, toss them into the stroller or jogger (Trina just got hers) and take them out while they're sleeping. Leia seems to enjoy her morning adventure and will go back to sleep within the hour giving me enough time for a quick shower and cat nap.
    3) It's too hot. That's why you should have run this morning when you were complaining about it being too early.
    4) My (insert body part here) hurts. If this is a serious injury see a doctor. If this is a reoccurring injury see a doctor. If it's so painful you can't run, see a doctor. If you are using the pain excuse without seeing a doctor you are in denial or trying to excuse yourself from the workout.
    5) I'm too sleepy and sleep is valuable right? True, sleep is valuable for rebuilding muscles when you are in training but if you aren't running then you're body has been recovering since the last run (which may have been last Saturday). Go to bed earlier.
    6) I drank too much last night. Too bad for you, you should have thought about your run this morning or tonight anyways. It's your own fault.
    7) It's still too hot and I might get dehydrated. That's why you should have run this morning when it was cooler and there was a breeze but you were too busy pushing the snooze button for the 4th time thinking, "Just one more snooze and I'll get up for good."

Overall, we all make excuses for not spending time on our training but it really is doing more damage to you than good.
    • You won't be prepared when it's time to run the full 13.1 or 16.2 miles.
    • You will gain more weight or lose less weight.
    • Everyday you use your running muscles they get stronger and bigger and better.
    • You will not be successful only training on Saturdays because that means that you would have only run 4 times a month, 28 times until the marathon (that's not good).
    • Chances are your running partner is running and you're not then they will be faster than you and you will be all alone while they school you.
    • You'll feel guilty all day long that you didn't run.
    • Tia will be extremely disappointed in her Raptors.

Let's get out there and stop making excuses and run and blog and run and blog. Elizabeth doesn't call me "the Intimidator" for nothing.

Plus, I like to have a glass of wine or two at night with dinner and I can't do that and then go run 3 miles and who wants to drink in the morning anyway? Not me, cheers to my 2 miles today with my hubby and baby in tow.

    Tia's Mission

My mission has been to improve fitness and so something extraordinary. I've had 'run a marathon' on my before I die list for a while so that I don't die knowing that I haven't accomplished anything. This season I am trying to push my body a little faster and work on diet.

The Raptors have been amazing for me. They make me happy and I know that they are a team that works well together. Right now though in my training, I'm feeling burnt out. I don't think summer is helping.

    Blazing

    10:43 1 mile

    54:57 4 mile total

    13:45 pace

If you didn't know any better you would think I was from Kenya!!!!!!

    Time

    Distance Time Pace
    4 Miles 1:00:05 15:01

    Splits

    Mile 1 15:03
    Mile 2 14:45
    Mile 3 16:00
    Mile 4 13:12

I started off way too slow and couldn't make up the time.
Today is a speed day, I am going after a one mile time below 11 minutes and an aggregate time below 55 minutes. Wish me luck.

    Wednesday, June 17, 2009

    Where is he now?

    13:40 On A Bum Leg

A tenth of a mile into Saturday's run and it feels as if I pulled a muscle in my lower right calf. I glance at my Garmin and see I am at a 12 minutes per mile pace. The pain is not too bad, but considering Jasper's recent injury and my history with my calf I didn't want to try and run through the pain and risk further damage. Nonetheless, I felt good and the pain wasn't too bad so I labored on. At one mile 12:32 mpm, mile two 25:33, mile three 40:00 mpm, mile four 54:43 for an average pace of 13:43 mpm. I was so fast that my speed demoralized Tia and she was forced to have someone come and pick her up. For that I apologize (Sorry, Tia). I am still learning how to handle this speed and intensity and I will try and control it in the future. With my goal being 14 mpm I am excited going into the start of official training. So if you feel a breeze on Saturday that's probably me running past you!

    Phenomenal

My training over the past two weeks has been phenomenal! I've worked out 10 of the past 16 for a total of 40 miles run and over 20 hours of cross training mostly weights, swimming is still hard. My weight has settled at 269 and I am ecstatic since I haven't been in the 260's since December. My eating habits are still abysmal as a whole, but the past couple of days I have made progress so I am hopeful. I have a solid foundation upon which to build and I am excited moving forward.

Monday's time 56:27 which was my fastest non Saturday run, and the first time I have ran back to back sub l hour 4 miles. Blazing!!!! My recovery time is noticeably better and the aches and pains post run are not as severe.

6/13- Last cardio run for the Raptors

I don't think that this is as exciting as the "people" Raptor photos but as part of my revolt as as photographer, I have asked Jasper to take a picture of our food instead. Let me also say that it's impossible to make everyone look good all the time.
This week was the last week that the Raptors will be running a "cardio/fitness" run. These runs are designed to improve overall heart, lung and body fitness. They are to get our "couch" bodies ready for the training weeks that are to come.
Maria asked me if we were taking a step back by returning to a 2 miler. My answer is yes and no. Yes, the mileage drops for several reasons. 1) It gives our body a rest for about a month before continual increases in our training programs. We've taught our body to reach up to 5 miles but we haven't taught it to train. 2) When our official training starts next week, you will be running or walking at marathon pace. This means that if you want to finish before the course closes, you need to be training at that pace or else you won't make it. If you are training at a 13 minute a mile pace, you MAY finish with a 12:54 pace at best. We can't expect miracles to happen on race day. It's hard work to get your body to race pace. I have been working on dropping my pace down to 11:30 but the closest I came was 12:15 in 2 months. 3) The heat is working against us and we need to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves until the sun lets up.
The Raptor of the Week have been a hit and keep a look out on Mondays for our new Raptors. Enjoy your runs.

    Tia- 50 stater

I just finished watching Dean Karnazes's Ultramarathon, his documentary about running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. Yes, I cried a little to see all those people finishing. I think it's programmed into me now.
    I enjoy seeing accomplishments occur.
After seeing this, I am definately on the road to become a 50 stater: http://www.50statesmarathonclub.com/50dc/index.html#
1 down, 49 to go, who's with me?

    Injury Prevention

On the heels of the seasons first reported injury, and considering that I don't see a lot of stretching going on prior to our weekly runs, I thought I would support Tia's injury prevention discussion by reiterating stretching as a way to prevent injuries. Check out the link in the Coach's Corner.

    Shout Out!

Wanted to send out a nice, loud "Good Job!" to those who showed up for the mid week training.

Raptor of the Week: Steve Bade

    Steve Bade
    37 years old
U.S Air Force, Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist
Currently training for half marathon that he will run 'satellite' while on duty in a treadmill in Afghanistan.

Favorite running song: Bottom by Tool. "Serious music makes serious running."

He runs partly, because the Air Force says I have to. But mostly because I love the feeling. I never used to consider myself an endorphin junkie, but one of the ways I motivate myself when I don't really feel like running is to tell myself that I'll fell better after a nice long run...and I always do.

Current Running Goal: To score max points on my fitness test, which means running 1.5 miles in less than 9:48.

Worse Case Marathon Scenario: That on 17 January 2010 I will be running 13.1 miles on a treadmill in Afghanistan. I really hate treadmills. Assuming that I will be home, my worst fear is injuring myself and not being able to finish.
Best Case Scenario: Finishing in under 105 minutes (sustaining an 8 min pace). With six months in Afghanistan to do nothing but train, it may be doable.

    • About the family: Pretty boring family, actually. I have one brother and one sister, both younger. My sister is a pharmacist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She's married and has two girls, 4 and 7. They came to visit us a couple months ago and had a good time. Allison (the 4 year old) was afraid of coyotes, but she got over it. My brother is a stage manager in NYC. I don't see him very often. Pretty boring family.
    • Favorite movie/TV quote: I love one liners. I've got about a thousand and they all annoy my wife, so that's good. I love funny--almost anything Peter Griffin or Homer Simpson says is worth repeating.
    • About Collections: I have couple of small collections of nerd stuff, but nothing excessive -- Star Wars and Simpsons memorabilia, stuff like that. I also have about a dozen pair of Converse All Stars in a rainbow of colors, including several plaids and a custom pair I had made in the colors of the Italian flag with the dates of their World Cup wins. For those of you who don't follow international soccer, Italy won their fourth World Cup title in 2006 while we were living there.
    • Current running mantra: I suppose I should come up with something snappy like 'temporary pain, lifelong gain', but I haven't thought of anything cool yet. I just wanna run.
    • Last time you went out of town: On memorial day we went to Phoenix to a red carpet event showing of a movie called 'Brothers at War'. It is in limited release, so you probably won't see it until it comes out on HBO--documentaries don't tend to do well in the theater. It was a special invitation event for military and their families, veterans, and Blue and Gold Star mothers. It was hosted by Cindy McCain and emceed by Gary Sinise. The movie is about two brothers in the Army and their other brother who is a film maker who followed them to Iraq to see what they did and why they did it. It was a very cool evening. Gary Sinise is very supportive of the military, and meeting him was an awesome experience. The movie was excellent as well. It was very moving, and offered a realistic glimpse of what goes on over there that the media will never show. Check it out at brothersatwarmovie.com.
    • About the Shuffle: Until recently I didn't listen to anything while running. My mother-in-law gave me an iPod shuffle for Christmas this year, so I've been using that lately. I need something kind of dark and serious, yet still up tempo to run to. If the music is too happy I lose focus and motivation. Serious music makes serious running, and nothing is darker or more serious than prog metal--bands like Tool, Dream Theater or Fates Warning. At the moment, Bottom by Tool is probably my running song of choice. It has a cool spoken word part by Henry Rollins.
    • About Scotch(AKA favorite drink): Single malt Scotch. That's not what you meant? Sparkling water. Just plain carbonated water. I started drinking it when we were living in Europe. Europeans love the stuff, most Americans can't stand it, which makes it kind of hard to find here. I actually started drinking it accidentally. Being a typical American I thought it was nasty, but I had opened the bottle and didn't want to waste it. The bitterness kind of grows on you, and by the time I finished the bottle I decided I kind of liked it. In Europe they sell it in 1.5l bottles by the case, that's how I used to buy it. Fortunately, Fry's sells it in cans, I go through about a 12 pack a week.
    • About work: U. S. Air Force, Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist -- at the moment I am the Weapons Section Chief in the 355th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at DM. I supervise and lead 147 personnel formed into 36 weapons loading and maintenance crews that are responsible for testing, inspecting, servicing, loading and unloading the weapons systems of 84 A-10A and A-10C aircraft for both aircrew training and combat operations.
    • About the Raptors (stories): I can't think of one... I'm sure something cool will happen at the race that I'll be able to tell my grand kids about, but so far nobody has done anything memorable.

    Saturday's Run

Well, well, well! Here I am...it's been awhile and I have a few updates for you!

Saturday was my first run with my new Camelbak RaceBak hydration system and I must say that it was pretty sweet! The pack is awkward to put on due to it's liquid-goodness, but once on, it was surprisingly comfortable (aside from the fact that it isn't form-fitting on the bottom, so it tends to float around on its own)! The material of the shirt is stretchy, so it compresses on the water chamber as you drink, which helps push the water out AND prevent the chamber from flopping all over the place. It holds 72 ounces of water, which you THINK would be enough for a 5 mile run, but, I guess I'm a fish, and I totally finished all of it, PLUS took 5 cups of water from the two water stations! Overall, I give this item an A+!

    Next item of interest:

So, yeah...I was running along the river, like I've done so many times before, when I started to feel a little jabbing in my 2nd toe on my left foot. It was bothersome, but not HORRIBLE, so, I ignored it. I felt it as I was running, but eventually, I got used to it and just kept pushing along. Finished the run. Felt good. Went and ate breakfast at Beyond Bread. Got in the car and decided to check it out...untied my shoe. Quickly took off my sock. Threw sock on the passanger's seat. And looked at a teeny-tiny cut on my 2nd toe. Turns out my middle toenail was just a teeny bit too long and decided to smoosh up and slowly sliver away at my 2nd toe. I think it's no big deal and must have just been a quick cut, when I go to pick up my sock and see this:
Bleh! Lots of blood for a silly little cut! Icky! Icky! Icky! So, moral of the story is....ALWAYS TRIM YOUR STUPID TOENAILS otherwise you'll have a bloody sock to contend with!

In other, unrelated, news...I also purchased a 1 liter wide-mouth SIGG water bottle in red (which is really HOT PINK) and I LOVE IT!!! Yay! Here's a picture:
You would think with all of these new gadgets (and extra time on my hands), that I would have correctly calibrated my Nike+ iPod system by now, but NO!!! I'm not that cool. So, while all of you ran 5 miles on Saturday. I ran 6.07 Nike+ Miles! Take that! ;)

That is all. No more blogging for another six months or so! ;)

6/6- Raptor 5 mile run and injury lecture

The Raptors have been getting into a nasty routine of starting 30 minutes late. That stopped today. We started on time honoring your time and dedication. We began promptly at 6:35AM. NO more waiting. It's getting hotter and we need to spend quality time on the course out of the heat.
Even with the the start time, Steve still schooled us running circles around us.
Jamie also sported her new Racebak which is a Camelbak vest wearing it under her Nike+ shirt. I noticed that it did sport a snazzy outside tube insulation which would keep the water in tube nice and cool.
It was a nice 5 mile run on the river. I am pushing for another 15 minute earlier start? What do you think?
Afterward, I took some time to do an injury lecture called "Raptor Extinction". I really missed Coach Earl on this one to speak to shoe purchasing and injury prevention but the Shelbys were sidelined with illness.
After the lecture we spent some time to socialize at Beyond Bread. Yummy!
Course finishing order: Christy, Tia, Steven (he did maybe 6-7 miles backtracking), the Vettas, Riley (soon to be Raptor), Jamie, Lisa, Steven (again) and Mary, Chris, Camille and Emma. Jasper took time off to recover his injury.
Good job Raptors. See you on Wednesday 8:30PM Reid Park.

    Overdid it :(

My body was faster than my legs could carry for three miles in 29 minutes and 48 seconds. Because of my 9:56 pace, my left knee is in pain. It hurts when I walk up and down stairs and walk fast. I can feel the pain from the inside of my knee, and it especially hurts when I lock it into place. However, I feel no pain bicycling unless I slide my foot backwards on the pedal. I have been massaging the outside of my knee but I can’t find any response from muscles or tendons. After doing some online research on Runner’s World – Injury Prevention, I have concluded that it is Patellar tendintis (below). This means that I will be on the side lines recovering. In the meantime, I will be doing cross-training (i.e. bicycling) and leg extensions to strengthen my knee.

    Excerpt from Runner’s World online:
Patellar tendinitis is inflammation of one of the knee-joint tendons. Tendinitis occurs when tissue breakdown outpaces regrowth, and is caused by increased mileage, hills (especially downhills), and pace. Running through tendinitis will make it worse and prolong your recovery, says Davis. But treated early, it can heal in a few weeks. Here's how: cross-train, ice, wear a patella strap, take anti-inflammatories, stretch, and do exercises to strengthen the joint and quadriceps, such as leg extensions.

    Coach's Moment

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we begin to get serious about our training relative to distance, I thought it necessary to remind people to take care of your feet. One of my biggest problems last year was the agony my feet endured throughout the training. Now of course I do carry around a significant amount of poundage, but proper running shoes, regardless of size, can enhance training and prevent injuries. Don't take my word, ask any returning raptor or better yet read my new article on the Importance of Proper Running Shoes in the Coach's Corner. I know it can be expensive, but I promise on mile 8 you will be glad you made the investment.

    Mid Week Raptors

Wednesday was our first group run during the week. I ran a loop around Reid Park.
    All ladies tonight.
It was an especially busy time at the park with a duathalon running the park. The Toros were also playing so parking was sticky.

Jamie was especially excited to run mid-week. Thank you ladies, Christy, Nicole, Emma, Camille, Lisa and Jamie for making it a great first mid week run.

    So you want the camelbak?

There has been a lot of talk of getting the camelbak for a hydration system. I love the camelbak. I ran with one in my half marathon and did well.

Jamie found this neat one off of Amazon. It's called the Racebak. It's a vest that you can wear alone or wear under a longer shirt. It is pretty interesting looking and I am excited to see how it works out for Jamie.However... after reviewing many products I think that we should all buy from this company:
If you are a Male Raptor click here
If you are a Female Raptor click here

I mean we would be one good looking team- wearing our Raptor shirts and everything.

    Raptor Claw!

Although I have been working hard to hold Tia back, I definitely understand why she is so excited about the future of the Raptors. Not only is the attendance spectacular, but I've noticed that we spend a lot of post run time just hangin out. It is a sign that we are bonding as a team and building that camaraderie that we will need to help each other get through the more difficult runs in the future. So once again, a giant "Raptor Claw" for all who continue to make the Raptor team stronger.

First of all, I was 'blazing' not flaming just for clarification. I like the timing runs it fires up that competitive spirit even if you are competing against yourself. It adds an extra motivational factor and we will need all we can get. I too want to give a shot out to Christy. I think we need to create an award for the fastest Raptor!

Also want to thank Emma for pushing Andrew around and for committed enough to hang out with all us old people.

    It's All About the Bling

Every once in a while I go online to look at the various finisher medals for the marathons. I know it should be all about the run but sometimes I need the medal to give me extra motivation. I love the thought of seeing Las Vegas for the first time and getting that extra heavy medal. I am one of those people who only loves running while she is running (walking-no need to comment Earl). I always enjoy it but it takes that extra effort to get me started. During my runs (walks) I think of how fast I will be in Dec. I think of what it will feel like to complete another half marathon. It is all so exciting. After checking out the other marathons, I wonder if I can complete three halfs next year or--a full (crazy though it may seem). All I know is I want another heavy medal and I haven't earned the first one yet. Is there a support group for medal addiction?

Hello, My name is Katrina and I am a marathon medal addict.
Clarification: The Rock and Roll Marathon series gives extra medals for people who complete more than one of their events in a year. The 26.2 medal is for completing two half marathons . The 39.3 is for completing one full and one half in one year. The triple crown is for completing any three Rock and Roll events in one year. You can view the other heavy medals at

    100 Raptors!

It's been a good week and the running addiction is quickly growing on me. It's summer time which means that if I miss my 4:30AM run that it's okay, I have until about 6AM to get my run in place.
The summer means lots of changes for me and my running.

Our family was approved for Tucson Community Supported Agriculture, which is a pre-paid veggie program that supports our local farmers. I know that it doesn't seem that great to people who are not fanatical about veggies like I am but at night before I go to bed, my last thought is that Friday I'll get to go and pick up my share!

I have noticed that I feel better when I eat a full meal of organic veggies and some pasta. I usually have lots of energy left in my legs for the final push in.

We will also be starting a weekly run meet up on Wednesdays which will help make many of us more accountable for our week day running.

I have to echo Earl on many of his sentiments as far as attendance goes, last season sometimes it would be a total of 3 of us and on the good days 7. It is so nice to know that 5-11 people are out on the course along with you experience the heat and mileage. I know that I get a lot of credit from the Raptors for the work that I do here but I have to tell you that it's all for you.

I began the Raptors because I knew that I had a hard time working out and that it was nice to know that someone was there at the finish who just experienced what you did. I never thought about the size that it would get. I love the Raptors! I love what they have done for my life and my health and my mind.

I have built lasting relationships with many of the veteran and new Raptors that I couldn't imagine my life without a Saturday run. It's a part of my lifestyle. I was floored one day when one of the Shelby kids woke up on a Saturday and said "It's running day."

It's Running Day. Think about all that has changed within in yourself. On Fridays I know that "I have to run tomorrow." Or that "I have to drink more water today." Or that you are one of the few people who understand that even at 6:30AM the heat is still a factor. Or that you tell people, "Well, in my running group..."

Commitment and Dedication run deep in the Raptors.

Thank you to Earl, Lisa and Jasper who are consistently making me slow down on my planning for our group. Earl often tells me to just get through this one season at a time. Just an FYI: in my mind I have plans for 4-7 years down the road when the Raptor count is up in the 100's. Won't that be a sight? 100 raptors running around Reid Park in white shirts with a Raptor head on it!

In my ideal world I would quit my job and just organize Raptor training. I guess I have to work for Team in Training to pull that off.

5/30- Tia V. Jasper The photo challenge

Earl has been chatting up everyone on how bad my shots are but let's have a vote here:

I don't think this is such a bad shot. Everyone is happy and having a good time.

This one is taken by Jasper. Can you tell it's different photographer? I can't.
We had a 3 mile run that we timed. Christy lead the troops with a blazing 9 min 33 seconds. She said that she didn't think that she could do that again but I think she's on her way to becoming our fastest Raptor ever.
This week the award for WAY FASTER RAPTOR goes to Earl, flaming it up at 13 minutes 22 seconds which I believe is a personal best.
Other notable Raptors include Lisa, Jasper and Katrina who both beat their previous time! Congratulations Raptors!
Katrina gave us a little scare with her asthma acting up but she quickly recovered. Roger is still adamant that there was some cheating going on last week.
Emma also took some initiative to push our little Andrew in the Begay jogger which is swears made her faster.
The Raptors voted for a weekly Wednesday evening run at 8:30PM. See you at the park!
    Raptor Claw!

Who's Having The Best Week Ever?

At least as far as training goes. The start of official training has proven quite successful.
    This week's activities includes:

Including the run Sat I will have worked out for 5 out of 7 days.
12 miles running not including Sat. 15 min per mile pace 12 mpm fastest mile
    12 miles bicycling
15 minutes in the pool - Swimming is hard and I'm trying but it appears as if Black people have a
genetic predisposition not to swim well. I'm just sayin.
    4.5 hours weight training

As of Friday morning I was down 4 lbs which probably equates to 1 lb of actual weight loss, but that's good. I suspect I will achieve my 2 lbs of weight loss for this week by Sunday morning.

I am going to try and average around 4 days per week of exercise. 5 days doesn't give me body enough time to recuperate at least not in it's current version. But, all in all it was a great inaugural week. How did everyone else do?

    It Has Begun!

First, let me give a shout out to Tia for all her behind the scenes efforts at making the Raptor Running experience enjoyable and successful. The "Raptor of the Week" and "buddy system" ideas are great and it is why she gets paid the big bucks! I, for one, appreciate her physical and mental efforts.

Second, I would like to thank Daniel. Although the "Raptor Claw" started out as good natured ribbing, it is quickly morphing into the de facto symbol of showing positive support for our Raptor teammates.

Also, take a look at the new information in the Raptor Blog called the Coach's Corner. I will be adding weekly links to provide general information that could be useful to our training efforts. The latest link is "Running Foods". This is a list of foods that can be both healthy and support energy requirements for our training efforts.

Finally, I know I've said this before, but it deserves repeating. Congratulations to all of the Raptors for there efforts up to this point. Our attendance for weekly runs has been OUTSTANDING! Even when the time was moved to 6:30. I am really proud of the dedication everyone is showing, and I am excited at the prospects for the future.

    It Has Begun!

Now that we have received our official training schedule is seems as if our training has begun in earnest! Not to belittle our efforts thus far, but having received an"official" schedule seems like the level of accountability for our training has been raised.

    Weekly Status (5/26/2009)

Worked out 4 days which included bicycling, weight lifting, and swimming. And a brief respite in the whirlpool woohooo! While I have been working out successfully (I am probably as strong as I was back when I was in college), my eating habits have completely derailed my weight loss efforts. One thing I have learned is, as you get older no amount of exercises can overcome poor eating habits. I have to get this in check. Which is what I am working on as I move forward. In order for me to accomplish my goals I have to drop some of this weight I am carrying around. As a result, I have set a goal for my running weight to be 240 and I am now 278. So as a part of my weekly status I will report my training status, my weight progress and my motivational indicators.

    Weight: 278
    Motto: Make Lemonade!
Power Song: Bringing Sexy Back (Justin Timberlake) I'm recycling this one since it has worked before.

Raptor of the Week: Lisa Marie Tsosie

    Lisa Marie Tsosie
    25 years old
    Manager at Jonathan's Educational Resources
    Completed Shiprock Half Marathon
Currently training for P.F. Chang's Full Marathon

Favorite Running Song: "Come on Feel the Noize" by Quiet Riot & "Hot and Cold" by Katy Perry

She runs because she can. I also gives her reason to wear tights and not be a superhero. J/K. At the end of the day she knows she accomplished something all by herself.

    Current Running Goal: To finish
Worst Case Marathon Scenario: I might not get to the start line and I might not finish. Time is not important, finishing is.
Best Case Marathon Scenario: To finish and still be standing.
    • I like to take naps in the middle of the day when it's warm. I prefer to be warm than cold. I don't drink as much water as I should.
    • I have 2 orange striped cats named Starla and Bugsy that keeps me up at all hours of the night with their acrobatic acts at 2 in the morning.
    • I enjoy all types of books and I am also able to read several at one time. Several meaning more then 5.
    • I am convinced that John Mayer will some day have my children, let me make that clear, HE WILL have MY children, not I will have his children. (Tom says it will be a scientific break through. So I told him "YEAH, So be ready!") (Tom is my best friend who recently moved to Texas).
    • I like to crotchet when I have the time. I also like to knit but I hear that I do it wrong but, the way I figure is, if it stays together and it doesn't look too bad then it's all good :).
    • I also like roman noodles and cauliflower.
    • I use to don't like to run but have now find a new joy in it now.
    • I also finished my first half marathon early in May.
    • I wake in the middle of the night sometimes and realize that I am in MY OWN apartment by myself. WOW!!! That fact still amazes me all the time.
    • I HATE TO COOK period, it has been preplanned that I will never have to cook in my relationship with another person. Let me clarify that statement: I can cook and bake but if you would like to keep your kitchen recognizable and still standing by the time I'm done cooking then just don't let me cook.
    • In high school Chem. I almost burn down the science wing on two occasions, luckily I have reflexes like a cat, okay better so that whole incident was never a full blown act, made public (until now) or mentioned in newspapers. So yeah, I just don't cook, but in my apartment I do once in a while and if I ever cooked for you then you must be pretty special to me, or VERY BRAVE :)
    • I also like old trucks.
    • One of my favorite things to do is organize stuff, paper, areas, rooms, suit cases for traveling, etc. I have personally packed, 3 luggage bags, 2 pillows, 3 folding chairs, a 6 foot folding table, a sewing machine, 3 12 packs of soda and several misc. items all in a standard car truck.
    • Tetris is one if my favorite video games.
    • I also enjoy gardening, I enjoy growing flowers more than vegetables and herbs.

Okay Recap: Warm good, Cold bad, has crazy acrobatic cats, John Mayer will have MY children, loves noodles, amazed at live alone, cooking= Apocalypse, packing Houdini, green thumb. That's about all I want to share with you at this moment :D If there are any question. Please keep all questions to yourself :) J/K Just ask, the way I see it, if you can ask me then I can at least answer. But you never know if the answer is true, mauh mauhhhhhhh *evil laughter :)* Run on!!.

    5/23- 5 miles and a RAPTOR CHAPTOR

One the best things about being a Raptor is the recovery after the run.
We usually take time to decompress about our week and talk about how our time on the road works to help us during the week.

This week we are at The Begay Bungalow. The Begays provide some nourishment after our 5 mile run.

The weather was nice and cool giving us just enough cloud cover to be comfortable.

Our route took us under 2 bridges and near lots of bikes. From my understanding Camille is still having difficulty staying on her side of the path.

We are started to run in groups of people with our same pace.

This morning prior to the run a gentleman asked if he could have a sip of our water and I told him no problem.

Then he wanted to know who the RAPTOR were. I should have given him our cheer but I didn't. I explained our group and he wanted to know how he could learn more and I give him our website.

It always reminds me how unique our group is and how supportive we are for each other. For example, our exercise buddies are working well. Some people during the week are having trouble working out consistantly but your excercise buddy can help check up on your progress. Props to all the excercise buddies! Jasper even called Sue at work to make sure she was working out.

Others followed their progress on Facebook.

Last year, the Raptors was run on a less than 40 buck budget and we didn't have water stations other than a Wal-Mart jug of water and we've upgraded to this-----> A wonderfully cool Igloo water cooler! We've come a long way from a shoe string group (especially with Coach Earl trying to set up a Raptor "Chaptor" in Texas!)

Thank you Raptors. Keep your Raptor Claws up!

"Schedule your time now, for a Katrina Shelby-Rancho Sahuarita Home Tour...wait, nix that idea

After a usual bout of incompetence, I am now able to actually write on the blog with the rest of you...thanks for that Tia ;). I have to say, I really enjoy the whole training experience. Never being an athlete or even a regular exerciser, I now have the ability to actually move my feet and keep them going without keeling over. At first it was very hard for me. The starting time wasn't the issue, but the actual motivation was. At first it sounded like a really great idea, training and enjoying the company of others. As the time to start training came closer, I started thinking to myself, "Is this something that I really want to do?" But as time has progressed, these things have slowly slipped into the past. I now actually have a GOAL!!! The company is great and encouraging and I have something "AWESOME" to look forward to everyday, even if I do get lost in Rancho Sahuarita (with an experienced team member).

*In Katrina's defense, her internal GPS was broken. It was in a meltdown after completing the 2009 AIMS tests.

    In my defense........

It was really great getting to run with the team on Saturday. Everyone looked so nice in their designer Raptor Racing shirts. They will come in handy on days when the temperature isn't 1oo degrees. My pace on Saturday was 16:30. I want to at least get it to 15 minute miles in the next month or so.

I know that I have been slacking off in my training but all that is about to change. In addition to my workout partner checking up on me every week, I have enrolled in two Nike+ challenges. Who knows...maybe I will win one.

Now, let me clear a few things up. First of all, I did not get lost on the trail last week. I wanted to show Chris the nice houses on the streets close to the lake. Plus one wrong turn does not make a person (completely) lost. Second , Chris did not have to get me back on the right trail because I wasn't (really) lost. I knew exactly where the lake was :) . Recap....I did not get lost again. History did not repeat itself (exactly).

Here's to a week in which everyone trains...(raise beverage glass here).

    I am back!!

I am so excited that I am back running again getting ready for the next marathon. Sue and Christy are my challenge and I like that because they push me to do more, but I miss running with a buddy, wait a minute Elizabeth is back. Yay!, but I have to say Elizabeth that you have a month to shape up because we need to keep up with the young ones.

I am excited to say that running is becoming part of my routine even though is hard to do it during the week. Chris, my husband, has promised me that we will be running at least 2 times a week now that he is out of school. He knows that I am serious about it and he tries his best to support me. We tried running together but unfortunately his need didn't let him keep going.

Anyways, this is a fun group, I get to do something different and I really enjoy it and the best part is that we don't get to talk about work........

    See you next week!!

    5/16- 1st River Run

The Raptors were in good spirits this week in preparation for our first run on the River. We had an amazing turn out. Only missing 3 Raptors. Our team is going strong.

We aimed to start out at 7AM but really hit the trail at 7:30AM. After a team photo (minus Earl and The Vettas) we were all decked out in our snazzy team shirts we were ready for our run.
The sun beat down on our backs and on our raptor backs, next year I think we will be donning a white shirt with red lettering. Too hot for us in these thick shirts. Maybe next year we can even afford tech shirts.

I was stopped twice by people wondering what we were doing out "en masse". I stopped to talk to a gentleman about who the Raptors were and he was excited that we were out and about. Another gentleman asked who the Raptors were and then promptly asked if I knew a Jazz guitarist by the name of Begay from Oklahoma.

Everyone was on the same mileage and we learned a little more about how we spread out as a team. Steve, Sue, Christi, Jasper (plus 22 pounds of Leia), Lisa, Tia, Mary, Elizabeth and Maria, Emma & Nicole, Chris, Jamie, Katrina, and Camille.

After the heat, it was decided that we need to bump the time back to 6:30AM. Beat the Heat.

We also had assigned people to check up on our teammates on a weekly basis to make sure we are doing our weekly workouts.

Next time we get stopped, I am going to say-

    Everywhere we go
    people want to know....

    who we are.

    So we tell them..
We are the Raptors, the mighty, mighty Raptors.

What is the hardest part about training or being a Raptor?

This is the response to a group survey.
What is the hardest part about training or being a Raptor?

Finding the time to run on the week days!-Jasper

Continuing to work out regularly during the week has been the hardest for me! -Christiana

    Getting up Saturday mornings -Pat

I find being apart of the raptor running group not difficult at all. It actually gives me a reason to get up early on Saturdays and I enjoy seening everyone bright and early! I love the raptors. I find the support on the runs helpful, encouraging and the fact that others know what I am going through is nice. Always knowing someone will be able to explain running things and give me good advice is a being comfort. Go raptors!! -Lisa

    Only Because I'm Sick!

This week was a total bust! I only worked out 1 day, just pathetic. However, in my defense, I was sick, and still is a little. But I am going to have to push through it this week.

Unfortunately, on Sat. I will be out of town so I won't be able to run with you guys. See you in two weeks!

Today was one of my first recovery runs since Shiprock and it was a hard one.

I stayed up a bit later than I wanted to last night and drank 2 glasses of wines so I was a bit sluggish today.

I was running a 13:34 pace most of the way which an emphasis on my jiggly hips and outer thighs. I also felt run down like I just came off the 13.1 miles yesterday. My muscles were empty and run down.

While I was running this morning, I began to think about my training and how to get faster and I've devised a plan. I am planning to recover these next 3 weeks and then work my way up from 2 miles into 4 mile runs on the weekdays at a 11:50 pace.

I will begin week one in 3 weeks, run for 20 minutes at a 11:50 pace and increase by one minute every 2 weeks until I reach that goal.

So week 1: Monday- quick workout 11:50 pace for 20 minutes, Tuesday- easy run 45 minutes, Wednesday- Dance workout DVD, Thursday- 50 minute 12:40 pace, speedwork after, Friday- rest, Saturday- long run, Sunday- rest.

Week 2: Monday- 11:55 pace for 20 minutes, Tuesday- easy run 45 minutes, Wednesday- rest, Thursday- 50 minute quick paced run, speedwork, Friday- 20 minute easy run, Saturday- long run, Sunday- rest.

Week 3: Monday- quick workout 11:50 pace for 21 minutes, Tuesday- easy run 45 minutes, Wednesday- Dance workout DVD, Thursday- 50 minute 12:30 pace, speedwork after, Friday- rest, Saturday- long run, Sunday- rest.

It may not make me a faster marathoner but it will increase the difficulty of the training run weeks.

We'll see how long this lasts. I am excited to get out my Jell-o legs phase ASAP but patience is the key.

    5/9- No Outlet

Another week and more heat. This week brought on our first run with the high to hit 100 degrees.

It also was the first week that we reversed the course around that crazy Sahaurita maze we lost one of our Clausons via a turn that looked similar to the one that Katrina lives on.

Even Katrina (who lives in the neighborhood that we run in) got lost for the first time this season. Luckily, she was with Chris who we are sure got Katrina back on course.
We had 3 runners on recovery from their run in Shiprock. They ran 2 miles and took time to make sure that people didn't get lost (too late).

Tonight we have our first support team meeting and social event.

    Start to Finish

I used the restroom for the second time before I got on the bus that would take us to the start line. As I was sitting there beside Tia when I began to feel nervous, scared, and excited about the half-marathon. I was nervous because I never ran over 10 miles before that event. I was scared because I remembered how I felt after I ran 10 miles (dizzy and clammy). I was excited because this would be a new milestone in my life.

As we rode the yellow school bus from the start to finish line, I saw the course that I would have to run. I made sure to take some mental notes of landmarks along the way. There was a warehouse near the last downhill stretch next to a housing complex; a slight turn before the last downhill stretch; the junction to Red Mesa which at that point I felt it was already a long distance; abandon wood structures left from a Navajo summer ceremony; a large shallow valley; and finally the volcanic dikes that connects to the Shiprock monument. Immediately after we got off the bus, we got in line to use the restroom again.

At the starting line, there were people stretching, jogging, deep breathes, and running or sprinting. We stood and waited at the end of the main starting line. I was worried about starting out too fast and burning out before half way point or sooner. So at the start of the half-marathon I forced myself to run at a very slow pace up the slight upgradient hill. For the first mile, I was feeling very comfortable that I considered skipping my one minute walk but I reconsidered since it was only the first mile. After I took my one minute walk, I started to pick up the pace towards my training pace. The five minute per mile marathon runners started passing me at mile two, and they gave me additional motivation to complete strong.

I ran, according to my Nike+iPod system, a steady pace of 11min51sec per mile for the remaining distance. I was pretty much a solo runner nearly the entire distance of the half-marathon until mile nine. Before mile ten, I started to gain on the stragglers who either started out to fast or hit a mental barrier. There was a guy limping and a lady whom seem to struggle with motivation.

I knew that I was on the last stretch when I past the warehouse near the housing complex. I could see the finish line when I got off the main road and hit the dirt path towards the finish line. I finally made it and feeling good! I don’t remember looking at my finishing time but I remember that Izzie was at the end. All I need to remember is that I started and finished with the love of my life.

The new loggo very cool, can wait to get my t-shirt. I'm very proud of Tia, Jasper and Lisa for the Saturday marathon. Go Raptors!!!

    UPDATE

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, that Part III of TUCSON MARATHON 2008 in the Raptor blog season 1 has just been updated. Check it out.

I came to finish!!! I am mortal!!

Night before- I recieved loads for texts wishing me luck for my run and convicdence that I would finish from my supports. So I was ever happy. I was not really nervouse about the run because it was another run, just with a larger running group and in a new place and of course a little longer :). But other then that I end up crawling into bed around 11PM Tucson time and lucky enough I'm an old lady or atleast have the habits of them, so falling asleep was easy minus the fact I was thirsty. At about 12PM I had this strange feeling of something crawling on me so I woke up to Tia asking me something, I can't remember but I swear in the moment I could totally comprehend what she was saying but now I couldn't remember. Then I went back to sleep.
4AM- I wake up to Tia moving around the room and just turned up my ipod and caught some more zzzs. I then wake to Tia telling me to wake up and the excitment of race day. I took my shower as always and then sliped into my running gear, really debating if I should wear my shorts or the long bottoms. So after a few moments ended on the choice of wearing both, worst thing I take one off because it's hot, best leave everything on. (now looking back on it all, one of the best calls of the whole thing, not like the bloks) After dressing ate a peanut butter sandwich, so tasty!! Off to the starting line. Got in line for the bathroom, the best advice, laugh but it's true. We got there early and got our packets. It was an amazing feeling to see and hold my first number for my marathon and then look at the shirt I would soon be able to say "Yeah I ran it and finished!" After adjusting my number and all my gear I got in line for the bathroom again. Then we waited for the bus to take us to our starting line. The bus ride was okay, just alot of nothing but monumnet far into the distance. To think all this preparation has been done so that I and a few hundred people can brave the elements and find true inner strength to complete our herculain race as mortals.

mile 1: Okay there was the gun, walk it, don't want to not finish, last in not bad, someone has to be. You're here to finish. You've run 10 miles before and all you have to worry about it bathroom breaks other then that, that run was smooth sailing and hey it even rained then too. So it's good, nice and slow is how the turtle won!! Okay walked .2 miles I think I'm ready if not then slow and walk it again. It's raining, that's okay, I've trained in the rain and it was a good run, so no new terrain here. :)

mile 2: Yeah now 12 more!! Cool. Okay I should of shuffled my playlist a little, it's okay. Trying to text my supports in Tucson on my progress, nothing. :( bummer, I had signal a minute ago, damn!! oh will, I'll just keep making them and at the end of the end of the race my phone will mail them all out at them time I was writing them. Genuis!!! Man look at all the people in line for the restroom, hahhaha I pass them. More rain.

mile 3: Okay 2 down and just 11 more to go. I wonder if the last 3 miles will really kick my butt? Okay game plan, just get to 10 miles and then think it's just one go around the park. I've done that loads, I can do that, worst case, I'll just run for 30 more minutes after I hit 10 miles. Sounds good. Good plan!!! Water sation and my first strawberry blok!!! MMM bloks, so tastly, I could eat these all day!!! Save a text. All the people who I passed at the restroom all past me at mile 3's restroom stop :D hahahah. More rain.

mile 4: I wonder if I should take off my layers?? No, you run better when your warm, and you don't know if it will be cold all of a sudden, okay layers stay as is. Water sation and my second blok!!! MMM bloks.

mile 5: Damn it, there's a rock in my shoe, okay problem solved, hit the pravement again. Water sation and my third blok!!! MMM bloks. More rain.

mile 6: Just 7 more miles or 4 to ten and then 3 after. :) Tricking the mind and the body will follow :D. Water sation and my fourth blok!!! Bloks really really chewy.Man there are loads of people here at the half way mark, don't forget to run the mat. Done and done, okay I have registered a half way time :) Yeah half.

mile 7: Man it feels like they added a few more yards to this mile, alot longer then all the others. Would they really do that?? Maybe *rised eyebrow* Water sation and my fifth blok!!! Is it possible that the Bloks can make me heavier?? I feel heavier. Oh yeah half way!!! Gatorade!!! MMM!! On second thought I'll hold off for a while might need it at the next mile. Hey guess what, more rain.

mile 8:Water sation and my sixth blok!!! Last one for the time being, oh I think I'm going to be sick, movement and all those bloks not a good idea. Okay I'll wait a while to eat more bloks.

mile 9: Don't want to eat a blok. Okay note to self, John Mayer is great for listening in general but not on mile 9, SKIP 2 songs. Now is a gatorade time and walk a little.

mile 10: Okay Lisa, just 3 more miles!! You've done that before, run in the park, one foot in front of the other remember. I bet Jas and Tia are almost at the finish line. I hope their run has been good. I'm glad I'm all bundled up :). Water sation.

mile 11: Yeah only 2 more miles left. Water sation." You're here to finish"

mile 12: Water sation, hey look it's a 12 on the road, oh my god I got one more mile!! Cool, nice and easy.

mile 13:Hey look there is Basha's, just got to past that and then straight on to the high school.
WAIT DETOUR!!! DIRTY ROAD!!! I really hope that I don't hurt myself as close as I am to the finishing line. *Looking up* Okay so among all those people at the end is mom, Tia, Haikayra, Izzy, and Jasper. Almost there. Should I run faster?? No, I want to be able to run the P.F. and be able to bounce back to train.
mile 13.1: Man my foot hurts. Man there are so many people here. Hey there's Tia, Oh I'm almost done, I'm going to cry, wait hold it, cross the line first. *Nike Plus" Congrads this is your longest workout ever!!" * *beep, beep* Oh my god I'm done!! Whoa you want my chip okay. Arm shoots out of not where and awards me a shine, yellow necklace around my neck. Cool!! Oh there's mom, and her camera flashes me in the face and I start to cry because she says she is proud of me. Man, I'm hungry, Wow, the flolic acids settling, I'm feeling it in my knees and thighs. MMMM.... where can we find some grub?? Oh I want my crocs, take my shoes off they don't like me anymore!!!
